Can the „brutalization theory“ explain the outbreak of violence during the Ukrainian Revolution (1917–1921)?

Abstract: The author of this study tries to analyze the possibility of using George Moss‘ „brutalization theory“ to clarify the outbreak of violence during the Ukrainian Revolution (1917–1921). After researching each part of this theoretical concept, the author claims that it does not fit into the Ukrainian case. The author’s arguments prove that this construct, built on the Western European narrative, cannot be used to understand the causes of violence during the Ukrainian Revolution.

Keywords: „brutalization theory“, George Mosse, First World War, Ukrainian Revolution (1917–1921), violence.

Legislative position of education of minorities in Vojvodina between the years 1919 – 1929 (with the emphasis on the use of their native language)

Abstract: One of the most vital questions that needed to be answered concerning national minorities in Yugoslavia after the first world war, or rather after the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, was the question regarding the usage of their native language. In this study I will dedicate myself to discussing the government´s academic, school or rather educational politics towards minorities in the period between the two world wars. I will be focused on discussing the specific administrative and legal regulations regarding the representative minorities in Vojvodina and the whole of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes respectively. Opportunities regarding education in Vojvodina were diverse and there was no real consistency when it comes educational politics. The state finally revoked the 37 different provincial laws and regulations and put in place unanimous school regulations for the entire state in 1929 with the goal of unifying all social, political and public aspects of the Yugoslavian national basis. This study will exemplify how the state acted towards minority groups after establishing a new state and will illustrate the most important laws and law proposals regarding the use of their native language.

Economic history of Horehronie as a mirror of the historical toponymy of the region until the end of the 16th century

Abstract: The main topic of the presented study is the analysis and localization of old terrain names of hills, valleys of streams and meadows belonging to the Horehronia area in the 16th century which reflected the economic activity of man. Traces of historical reality captured in historical toponymy may help complete the picture of Horehronie’s economic history in the early modern period. During that period, this region was a quite economically developed part of the monarchy due to the mining of precious metals, the center of which was the town of Brezno. The individual toponyms are classified according to type of economic activity: mining, technical equipment, road network, agriculture, pastoralism and hunting.

Keywords: Horehronie region, toponymy, early modern period, economic history.

Soviet deportations of OUN family members from Western Ukraine in 1940–1952

Sectoral State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine, Kiev, Ukraine

Abstract: The analysis of new archival records from the “KGB archives” in Ukraine, made it possible to further study the deportation policy of the USSR in occupied Western Ukraine in 1940–1952. Along with campaigns and operations, there is a need to single out such a method of persecution by the Soviet special services as day-to-day deportations. It can be verified that there were three such deportation campaigns carried out in Western Ukraine. The first and third campaigns were carried out to clear the territory from “hostile elements” of the Polish population and the local elites of the Second Polish Republic, as well as the class enemies of the communist regime – the kulaks (well-to-do farmers). The second campaign was launched in response to the activity of the OUN resistance. During 1941 and 1944–1952, two deportation operations were carried out (22 May 1941, and Operation “Zapad” (“West”), 21–23 October 1947), and two campaigns of deportation in the format of the day-to-day activity of the Soviet special services (1944–1946 and 1948–1952). During the deportation campaign against the OUN family members, 66,448 families (or 205,938 persons) were exiled from Western Ukraine. The main purpose of the forced expulsion was the complete elimination of the Ukrainian anti-Soviet insurgency.

Keywords: Soviet deportations, Western Ukraine, soviet secret services, NKVD, MGB, KGB archives, operation “Zapad” (“West”), Organization of Ukrainian Nationalist, Ukrainian Insurgent Army, OUN families.

Slovak question in the revolutionary years 1848 – 1849 in the Viennese daily newspaper “Die Presse”

Abstract: In the first half of the 19th century, Vienna was one of the most important centres of political, cultural, social, and economic life in Europe. Here, various sociopolitical issues were intensely discussed, and a great amount of information was gathered. The revolution of 1848 – 1849 stirred up a debate about the future of the Habsburg Empire, Hungary and about nations living in this region. Politicians, but also the public, started to be interested in the Slovak issues. Therefore, Viennese press started to reflect on the situation of the Slovaks, their politics and activities. This paper is shining light on the reflection of the Slovak question in the newly established Viennese political newspaper “Die Presse”, which was widely read throughout the Europe.
